(xiv) Orangutan sanctuary, Sepilok

Orangutan sanctuary, Sepilok.

Opened in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned Orangutans. Importance increasing as the rainforest is destroyed to facilitate Palm Oil plantations.

96.4% human. Orang-utan's feed, hug, play like humans. Move with languid ease through the trees, peeling fruit with feet, gripping branches with each available limb. My only question is which is more developed? Us or the Apes?

4 hands, 4 feet. Whichever they may be, they would be skilled. I imagine Orang-utan Rugby, or Aussie Rules. Palming each other off, whilst gripping the ball with hand or foot. Orangu-Quiddith could also be fun, easily snatch the snitch.

The sanctuary is vital in supporting a species ousted from it's natural habitat. Orphaned Apes are coddled, nappied, hugged, cared for like human babies. Children's toys and blankets used for enjoyment and warmth. Independence introduced gradually; food moved farther from the sanctuary onto platforms embedded in natural habitat, encouraging development of exploration and wild tendencies. One graduate refuses to leave completely, returning occasionally to parade her child to staff and visitors. I imagine Michael Jackson showing his child from the hotel balcony to the waiting Paparazzi. Perhaps Jacko the Tan then moonwalks back into jungle depths.

Either way, orangutan's are awesome. Can't wait to hit the jungle tomorrow...
